It's time to play Name that Narcissist!!!

"Very disingenuous — has a fake smile, comes off as very scripted and has a selfish, me-first makeup. Always knows where the cameras are and plays to them. Has an enormous ego with a sense of entitlement that continually invites trouble and makes him believe he is above the law ... Lacks accountability, focus and trustworthiness — is not punctual, seeks shortcuts and sets a bad example. Immature and has had issues with authority. Not dependable."

This describes ...

A. Lindsay Lohan

B. John Edwards

C. Bill Clinton

D. Lohan and Edwards' love child

E. Clinton and Edwards' love child

F. Some genetic and mutant amalgam of all of the above PLUS a little of Charlie Sheen sprinkled on top.

In fact, it's Cam Newton. Or at least the assessment of Newton's interpersonal skills by the 'respected' author of a pre-NFL draft publication.

You remember Newton, the guy who played a pretty good game of quarterback at Auburn and could be the Panthers' choice for the top pick in the upcoming draft.

At least the writer used his name, but Nolan Nawrocki didn't say if his professional qualifications to make such a psychological assessment come from the school of Jung or Freud. His comments appear in Pro Football Weekly's annual draft guide.

Want to read more of what Nawrocki has to say? Punch here.

Did he go too far? Punch here.

Given the criticism, what's more important to the Panthers: Newton's time in the 40 or his Myers-Briggs? MG

Huge red flags for Newton. Trade down if possible or take Gabbert.

He's young and needs time to mature. Big whoop. That profile is too harsh.

Scam Newton smiles with a goofy grin since he got half the Auburn loot and going for 50 mill from the unlucky owner in the draft.
Jerry R aint too happy due to the union scam artists trying to burn America a new one.
FIRE THE SCABS. Hire new players. Cut prices in half. Just a game played by dumb pro jocks.

Sounds like the adults posting these comments need to grow up as well. If you don't want him, just don't draft him. Very simple!

Sounds like an accurate description of most high school students and all high school students who can bounce or throw a ball at the college.

JeMarcus Russell = Cam Newton

The profile could be any pro athlete, lest we forget..some could be called drug addicts and most could be described as dullards.

Anybody remember Kerry Collins? The kid's attitude makes a HUGE difference to the Panthers.

Anonymous said...

It's quite possible that the sports journalist who wrote that did so to try to plant more doubt in the minds of the Panthers because they have a higher pick than the team he is covertly affiliated with.

OR, he could be sharing his actual opinion. Who knows? Personally, I thing we should trade down so we can pickup a second round pick which we currently don't have.

(Pssst ... Its Cam)

Somebody must think readers are real stupid.

As a Dolphins fan, we don't want him.

I'll tell you who that really sounds like coming out of college: Michael. Vick. So for the sake of argument, let's turn back the clock: it's 2001, the Panthers are the Falcons, staring at eye-popping measurables and questionable character; do you want him?

Anonymous said...

Anyone comparing JaMarcus Russell to Cam Newton, is maybe correct. Let's not forget, Russell would have been a GREAT Quarterback had Oakland's front line been worth a dime. Let's not forget, NO QB has worked out in Oakland...

If Hambone got trashed my the scouts and draft...then he WILL be the guy Carolina picks. Here goes another season down the drain.

sounds like it's right on the money to me. Hope JR takes notice.

I have felt this way about Cam for a long time. Glad somebody finally had the stones to put it in print, rather than just hold the party line like all the other "sports journalists" and blow sunshine and rainbows up everyone's poopers. This kid (and his dad) have an ego as big as they come, and will be a cancer from day one. I, for one, will immediately drop the Panthers as my team if they draft this next great bust. Best move is to trade down.

Anonymous said...

Why do ppl keep comparing him to Jamarcus Russell?? Bc they are BLACK!?? WOW...their games are NOTHING alike whatsoever.

Journalists have personal grudges so who cares what they wrote? For all we know Cam chose not to attend this writer's alma mater..you never know..

Point is..there have been waaaay more White busts at QB than Black ones...fact is fact! Why dont they compare Cam to Tim Couch, Joey Harrington, David Carr, David Klingler, Matt Leinart?? See my point...

There is only 1 question to answer: CAN HE PLAY BALL? (period) the rest of this is just conjuncture...

Who knew Fred Lane would get killed by his wife? Who knew Rae Carruth would do what he did? There is no test of 'character' as ppl like to say..you never know what a person will do until they are in that position.

Marvin Harrison wasnt a loud mouth, diva WR when he played was he?? Didnt he kill someone?? ok...im done LOL

@ anonymous 5:36.

1. Dropping the Panthers as your team if you don't like what they're doing, is what any one with a life would do.

2. You won't drop them because you would rather bitch and moan about "your" team, and try to convince yourself and anyone forced to listen to your BS how smart you are.

The thing about this whole Cam Newton thing is, if he turns out to be a star all of this trashing him will turn into I want a Cam Newton jersey! People are so judgmental about other people when they have skeletons in their own closets. Come on people! You want players to play their sport not be a politician... If you need a role model, try looking at home for people you actually know instead of people you think you know!

Sounds like Nolan Nawrocki might have been looking into the mirror at his own reflection and was confused about who he was describing. These "writers, experts, know-it-alls" upset me many times more than anything that Cam Newton may have done in his young life. And personally if Cam was my son, I would look this "writer" in his eyes and ask him to repeat his "assessment".

Anonymous said...

This article is about Cam Newton and some dumb a== says it's Obama. This shows how a small handicapped mind works.

What do you expect the kid to do? He's been on a higher pedestal than King George for years. Here's an idea. Stop treating football players like Gods and maybe they'll stop acting like them. The reason he's playing to the cameras is because they're there.

This assessment has a lot of veiled racist code words used to describe Cam Newton...

Bitter much? WDE.

Cam is no more arrogant than any other successful college player. I don't think he is ready for NFL, but he has personality and he has talent. Panthers are sucking it up right now and need someone to revitalize the team. Is it Cam? Maybe not, but slamming a kid b/c you hate his team and love the controversy is pathetic.

The Panthers, and every other team in the top 15 who are evaluating Newton aren't going to be moved by what Nolan Nawrocki says (although he does have a decent track record). Hurney, Rivera and JR are going to go by their own assessments. But I do believe there's is a great deal of smoke with the Panther's supposed interest in Newton. They won't draft him, period. He is, primarily, a gigantic tool and secondarily, has project stamped all over him. I just can't see JR sanctioning that. If they do go QB with the first pick, it will be Gabbert. Again, Newton doesn't have a shot. But I hope they arrange a trade with Arizona (who clearly covets Gabbert), and pick up a 2nd rounder.

Anonymous said...

Mixed feelings about Cam. Way too risky for a #1 pick. I would pass on Gabbert as well. I never heard of him prior to this post season.

I think if the Panthers are smart they would try to sign Asomugha and pick Patrick Paterson DB with the pick. Take the Jet's approach and try to shut down the stud qbs in our division while we try to figure out something at the QB position.

If it were not for his father and the pay-for-play scandal, plus the cheating on two papers and the stolen laptop, this assessment might be too harsh. However, what I find incredulous is that supposedly "educated" sportswriters voted him the Heisman trophy winner.

The Cam fans are out there right now squirming in their seats. They've been pushing this guy and apologizing despite this gigantic shtstorm that surrounds him. This is not just one person's opinion. I can't name many pundits/draftniks/evaluators who believe he is the best QB in the draft, and even fewer who really think that he belongs at #1.

Cris,

Wish life were as simple as you see it. Did I go to Alabama yes. Do I write the assessment upon which this article was derived. No. It came from a respected football analyst. I don't know if he's qualified to say the things he said, but he said them. And that's news, even in Lee County, Ala.

Michael

They won't take him. Not a JR guy. Sorry.

Anonymous said...

He is a good kid. He wins and is absolutely confident he can beat you. I will take that all day. If some blowhard writer can rip him and armchair analysts think they know more, they probably never played the game! If you think about all that he has been through over the past 24 months, his back was against the wall, what do you expect. He handled it better than any 22 year old I've ever met. If you like someone better fine, but there is no need to tear Cam apart to make Gabbert or anyone else look better.

Anonymous said...

The Lockout is a SCAM and will be resolved before the season starts. Anyone saying anything negative about Cam is only doing it because they don't want him to go 1st in the draft. This is all opinion from someone that either never met him personally, or is sour cause he couldn't get an interview.

I can't believe I just wasted 5 minutes of my life that I'll never get back reading these pointless comments. Like everyone else who has posted here, I really need to find something better to do.

Hate to say it, but I applaud the guy for having the stones to say what he really believes. In this age of political correctness, it's a breath of fresh air. As for those crying about where he got his information, he has spent time around Newton enough to form an opinion. It's not like he is claiming he is a bank robber or something. He's just saying the guy is a total fake. It's his opinion, which is what draft day profiles have always been about. Five or six years from now, we'll know whether or not his opinion was worth anything.

As for my opinion, this guy's words simply have the ring of truth to them. I could be wrong, but we'll just have to see won't we?

el said...

And it'll be the same idiots on here bashing Newton that will be cheering him on when he takes the Panthers to the NFC Championship game a couple years from now. Listen, he's no Jamarcus Russel. Jamarcus' problems hovered around his ability to study a playbook, his athleticism (he never worked out), and his leadership skills. Judging from what Cam did on the field, not his personal life, he has surpassed Jamarcus Russel in every aspect of his game. I really hope the Panthers take this guy, but I wouldn't be upset if they went with Gabbert, Bowers, Dareus, or Peterson.

Somebody said this organization would not pick a black QB. Remember we had Rodney Pete as a QB before Delhomme? Grow up and get rid of your own racism !!!

I hope the Bills really want Newton. And we can convince them we do too. Too much of a risk for no. 1 overall. Trade down for picks, we need people on DL and more picks.

The reporter Nawrocki is clearly a Racist in my opinion and he is seeking negative attention for his publication and his Legend. I would Draft Cam Newton before I would have drafted Jimmy Clausen or any of the other kids this year that are QB's! Newton is the all everything that we need at the QB position. I remind everyone that Kerry Collins was a stud QB who as a rookie took us where no other QB at the time had taken their team to the Championship game. But he was terrible in the huddle and was an Alcoholic. He was even punched in the eye by his own lineman for calling a Black player the N-word. So our history with rookie QB's hasn't been all that great. ITs a gamble hiring anyone for any job anywhere! Look at the high school coaches who have had sex with the young students! Lets be civilized about criticizing people and just look at their credentials for the job. DO NOT LISTEN TO A REPORTER AND TRUST ALL THEIR OPINIONS! ITS NOT FAIR TO THE COLLEGE KIDS......Signed Greg Good.

JR will not knowingly take a player with questionable personal history. I have another thought: take Cam #1. Buffalo is salivating for him. For all their posturing, Denver will not take a QB. Trade Cam to the Bills for their #1, 2 and anything else we can squeeze out of the trade. Use their pick on Gabbert and trade with the Cards for their #1, 2, +. The Arizona pick should get us Green, making Smith expendable: if there is a CBA, we might get as much as a 2 for him. If we have 3 #2's, we can take Austin @ DT, Ponder or Caepernick @ QB, and Harris or one of the Texas CB's. This fills most of our holes by Day 2 by drafting Cam #1.

Anonymous said...

I do not want this black QB ---

I am not saying A BLACK QB -- I am saying THIS black QB

The kid is big trouble -- big big trouble

I've said it before (many times), and I'll say it again: Newton is a development prospect at best, and is nowhere near worthy of the #1 pick. Let someone else make the mistake of drafting him. His (lack of) QB intelligence and character issues should be sending up HUGE red flags to anyone with an ounce of common sense. Please, Carolina, do NOT make this mistake!

ahh....red meat for the i hate CAM contingent. enjoy though this is being torn to shreds. how much can we trust a guy who blindly, blindly says Cam has no leadership skills, cannot win a lockeroom and is not accountable?
http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2011/03/pro_football_weeklys_scathing.html

I've said it before there have been plenty winners in college: Leinart, Young, Bradford, Tebow, (insert name) and none have inspired their teammates to carry them off the field. Cam did, in one year no less. That image doesn't fit with the anti leadership, me-first description from Nolan. Seems like he - like so many others on this board who aren't really happy with their own lives -have a bone to pick.

Odds are 100-1 the same ones who defend this shady Newton character are the same ones who either cheered or would have cheered the OJ acquital in a downtown LA courtroom.

All I can say is I'm just happy the people on this forum are NOT calling the shots for the Panthers!

Talk about immaturity and arrogance, just listen to yourselves... this review reminds me very much of what I've been reading on these forums all along. Each of you has already made up your mind whether or not you like this guy and NOTHING is going to get in the way of your opinion.

If you hate Newton, you conveniently forget that almost everything said of him can be said of many of the past stars of the game, including "Broadway" Joe Namath, Farve and others. Those of you who defend him, will quickly disregard any serious critique of either his skills or his conduct.

The fact remains, people on this forum screamed for David Carr, Matt Moore and Jimmy Clausen... how has that worked out for you so far? Leave it to the pros, you don't know half as much as you think you do, and probably understand only half of what you know.

John said...

I didn't cheer the OJ verdict but I saw THAT one coming a mile away. The cops and the prosecutors blew that one big time, making rookie mistakes that a first-year criminology student could recognize. Unfortunately, I see a lot of the same kinds of mistakes being made in the Casey Anthony case down in Florida so don't be surprised if she walks too!

The Newton character abused his privleges and can keep on walking and that goes for anybody who recklessly abuses their privleges with lying cheating or stealing ... Same for the rogue union scam artists. Fire them all. They are greedy and unworthy. Pro sports has lost all integrity and the masses are being raped. The owners are clean.

Give these overrated ego maniacs a deadline to sign and if they miss it cut em loose for good. Too hell with them. Too many equally talented players out of college (with degrees) who would gladly play for a fraction those ungrateful rogues make.

Check your ever rising tv cable bill, gas prices going to 4 bucks a gallon, food prices, clothing, utilities, cars, etc etc.
The masses are paying more and more for all this uneeded entertainment trash in the worse of times as millions of jobs continue to China who is laughing all the way to the bank with America owning 15 trill. Wheres the WH? Starting more wars?

All pro sports need a cleansing. Time to start anew with fresh blood so owners can cut prices for in half. Help Americas masses. Outlaw the scum union who gives a rats ass about fans except to burn them a new one...

Banks, Wall St, business etc all been put thru the wash. Time to give pro sports gluttons that long needed bath ... The masses are sinking ...
