Auburn, Alabama, and Toomer's Oaks

As we all know, SEC Expats is the true home for reasoned discourse and compelling storytelling on the greatest conference in the land. But from time to time our humble correspondents write for less prominent publications.

So we thought you might like to see this story on Harvey Updyke and Toomer's Oaks from a little startup called Sports Illustrated.

Hope you enjoy.

Great article Tommy. A couple of minor comments: I question Air Force retiree Bear Bryant Updyke's comment that "I've been in the military. I've seen people die." I was in the Air Force and I never came close to seeing anyone die in the line of duty. I did almost get killed in a bar in Okinawa one night but that's another story. The other comment is: I agree with Attny Glennon Threatt's defense that his client has a mental disease and mental defects. Harvey Updyke has the worst case of obsession and possession I've ever heard of. On the other hand, those are probably not considered to be problems when it comes to Auburn vs Alabama.

Updyke is an outlier. The thing that always gets me about the Auburn-Alabama Hundred Years War is the level of vilification involved when:

The fans came from the same broader gene pool. They were born in the same hospitals. They attend the same churches. They go to the same schools. They play on the same teams. They work at the same companies. They play in the same foursomes.

And yet, given the anonymity of the Internet, they describe each other as angry, psychotic aliens who just feel, think and act differently from normal people.

Crazy Auburn people (Joke, J, just a joke)

Good one MG. Despite being on opposite sides of the rivalry, I'm sure we can agree that both schools have plenty of fans that belong in a room with striped sunlight, soft walls and no corners while wearing a sleeveless shirt...
