One more time, for emphasis...

The NCAA found no major violations by Auburn connected to the pay-for-play allegations involving Panthers rookie quarterback Cam Newton.

In unrelated news, no one from Countrywide, AIG, or Lehman Brothers has been prosecuted for wrongdoing in regard to the subprime lending crisis.

Probably because while the bankers'/CEOs' actions may have been immoral and destructive to the economy, they pretty much weren't illegal, most experts say. Auburn, meanwhile, was neither.

You are correct, Peter. The analogy is enough of a stretch to give me a charlie horse. However, this much is a true comparison: there was a lot of smoke surrounding Auburn over the last year, and more than just Cam. I wonder if the Auburn saga will turn out like Ohio State's, where all the rumblings and rumors lie just below the threshold of proof until a tipping point is reached.

I hope not. I hope that, whatever misdeeds AU *may* have done, they will not repeat, and the SEC as a whole can claim not only the pinnacle of athletic achievement, but a moral high ground as well.

Thanks, Carey. I know it's going to be impossible for some fans to move from "may" to "didn't," but the smoke surrounding Auburn last year consisted of Cecil Newton sitting in a room with two coaches from another team. All the rest was message board stuff.

The difference between Auburn and Ohio State (and Southern Cal and Tennessee...) is that when the NCAA investigated the message board stuff, it found out at least some of it was true with the others. With Auburn, they investigated for more than a year and found out it wasn't.

Carey - "there was a lot of smoke surrounding Auburn over the last year, and more than just Cam." You are probably referring to the four 8th-string players that went on HBO and claimed they got paid Wall Street executive money while they were playing there. Auburn was absolved of wrongdoing with those chumps as well. Only 1 of the 4 of them would even cooperate with the NCAA.

Why is it so hard to believe that Cecil Newton, a crooked preacher in the mold of Jim Bakker and Anthony Jinwright, just thought he was owed a CEO lifestyle because he is a preacher and used his son as a meal ticket? Go back to when you were 20 and think about your relationship with your father. Do you know everywhere he went, every personal interaction, every phone call he made, every conversation he had? No, you do not. To any man out there with a son around age 20. Does your son know absolutely every single detail about everything you do? No, he does not.

Cam & Auburn didn't do anything wrong. Deal with it.

You will never convince me that either Cam Newton or his father are the kind of people the majority of Charlotte's citizens want to be identified with. Anymore than they wanted to be identified with Bob Johnson and the "gangsta rap" he made his billions with. But, time and empty or filled seats will tell, won't it?

I would much rather be associated with Jerry Richardson.
