That's the opinion of Hall of Fame NFL quarterback Warren Moon.
Moon, an NFL Hall of Fame quarterback who has been advising Newton, says the Heisman Trophy winner from Auburn has been subjected to scrutiny and criticism far beyond what other QBs in the upcoming pro draft have received.
Exhibit I: This assessment of Newton by Pro Football Weekly's Nolan Nawrocki:
"Very disingenuous — has a fake smile, comes off as very scripted and has a selfish, me-first makeup. Always knows where the cameras are and plays to them. Has an enormous ego with a sense of entitlement that continually invites trouble and makes him believe he is above the law ... Lacks accountability, focus and trustworthiness — is not punctual, seeks shortcuts and sets a bad example. Immature and has had issues with authority. Not dependable."
Moon's response to CBS.com: “A lot of the criticism he’s receiving is unfortunate and racially based. I thought we were all past this. I don’t see other quarterbacks in the draft being criticized by the media or fans about their smile or called a phony. He’s being held to different standards from white quarterbacks. I thought we were past all this stuff about African-American quarterbacks, but I guess we’re not.
“Of course there is racism in every walk of society. We've made a lot of progress in this country. But racism is still there. I just thought in the sports arena we were beyond it. I think the way Cam is being treated shows we’re not."
Newton, on the other hand, enters the draft with some oversized baggage to go with his impressive skills. While at the University of Florida, he was arrested for being in the possession of a stolen laptop. Before entering Auburn, his father admitted shopping him to Mississippi State. Asking price: $180,000. As a result, he was briefly suspended then reinstated by the NCAA -- Newton says he never knew of his father's activities -- in time for Auburn's late-season rush to the national championship.
Newton has been mentioned as the possible top overall pick by the Carolina Panthers in the pro draft. His workouts have been mixed, and Nawrocki and others have recently homed in on his personality, work habits and ability to lead.
While Moon says Newton has been singled out because of his race,QB Ryan Mallett has undergone similar scrutiny. In fact, experts say concerns about the Arkansas All-American's character and personality may drop him down the draft board.
In recent years, as top rookie quarterbacks have demanded contracts in the tens of millions of dollars, teams have put more and more emphasis on a player's intangibles.
With the draft four weeks away, don't expect the probes to stop now.

None of the criticism is race-related. It is envy-related, "he's not from my school" related, and "I know you will never change" thinking.
As we all know, the SEC is the best and most competitive football conference of all time. The rivalries are intensely personal, none more so than Alabama-Auburn. Whatever school you went to/root for in the SEC, you rarely enjoy seeing anyone from the other 11 schools having success. So the fact that he went to Auburn provides non-Auburn fans plenty of reason to hate him.
Then there is that slug that helped birth him - yet another preacher who has no business behind a pulpit, another bucket of slime who thinks being a preacher entitles him to bucketloads of other people's money. How many times have we seen preachers like this? And why, once he was exposed to be the scum that he is, was he given a free pass and all of his evil blamed on his son? I will go to my grave not understanding this. Preacher after preacher after preacher gets exposed for using his position and people around him to fatten his bank account, yet for this one preacher, no one wants his head, they want the head of his son.
Also, for the 47,000,000th time, yes it is possible that Rev. Pond Scum concocted this pay-for-play mess entirely on his own, with his son having no knowledge. If you claim this is a physical impossibility, I defy you to present evidence that ever since your kids were born that they know every detail of every activity you have engaged in during their lifetime.
Then there's the notion that once you do something stupid or illegal, that is your character, you will always be evil, it is not possible for you to change, and those indiscretions must be mentioned at every mention of your name. Gordon displays this by bringing up the laptop again. Once again, I challenge everyone to expose one stupid or illegal thing you did when you were 18, so we can mention it every time your name comes up, even if you live to be 100. Oh, you say you don't do those things anymore and we shouldn't keep throwing them in your face? Then why do you keep doing it to this kid?
There is one other thing I could mention, but it is Peter St. Onge's favorite piece of evidence on this matter, so I'll let him repeat it.
So no, there's no evidence of racism in the treatment of Cam Newton. Tons of other wrong things, but not racism.
People described Jimmy Clausen in nearly the same way last year.
Can we drop the race card for a while and accept that Newton has baggage and that he is going to be more highly scrutinized both because of his talent and because his father asked for $180,000 for his son to help the team earn a national championship? How about we discount Mr. Moon because of his affinity for domestic violence or is that racist, too?
Looks like Moon is the racist! Isn't it funny how the first ones to play the race card are usually the biggest racistof the bunch? It goes both ways!
I think Hall of Fame QB Warren Moon who had to "first" prove himself in the CFL before given a chance at QB in the American NFL knows about racism. So the norm now is to claim someone is "playing the race card" as a defense when racism is present. That's like getting upset when someone calls you a liar when your actions prove that you are a liar. But it's ok. Persons who point out racism expect to be accused of "playing the race card" since after all that is now the norm.
Like with President Obama, the racists accuse those who call them out of doing so because you aren't allowed to criticize Cam Newton because to do so is racist. The fact is, a lot of criticism of both is just out and out racism. There are plenty of reasons to criticize Newton but a lot of what I see on the Observer comments is just "nudge nudge wink wink" little digs at him because of his race.
Big Ben of Pittsburgh was accused of RAPE. Favre sent pictures of his private area to a 20 year old young lady. These men are sexual deviants. In reality, most whites, especially white males hate the fact that this young man will make millions and will have White Women throwing themselves at his feet. With White Men, it's always about race and their desire to subjugate anyone who is different than they are.

Where do we get racism in the criticism of Cam Newton? Did anyone call the black reporters racist who questioned Jimmy Clausen last year? No they didn't. When you compare Newton to Russell...well that's kind of racist, a quick comparison would quickly show that's hardly the case. Vince Young, ditto. You're really just going on pretty surface associations - no pun intended, but actually... that pun fits.
Stick to what you've seen of him on the field, what you can PROVE of his character and avoid the leaps of "my gut tells me this". If you stick to the facts usually you can avoid being called a racist.
I think people pick Russell because he was the latest big bust as a #1 overall QB, but pick any of the other big busts and you have the same intention - race is not a factor. If they do mean it in a racist manner shame on them!

On Newton: I think he's immature, but will be a really good NFL quarterback about 3 years from now. You can see how hard he's worked to compete for a higher draft position. He's motivated and coachable. Gabbert will be Kyle Orton in three years. OK, but Yawn. Newton has a chance to be something special.
i"d be ok with taking Gabbert, Green or Peterson .. or even Dareus. But none of those guys have the potential to make us a lot better.

Why not? When something is as common as the rain, you don't take it very seriously. After a while, indifference becomes contempt, which is where I am.
It is possible that some bit of racism might still sometime be committed in this country by a white person against a black person (although it is much more likely to happen the other way 'round).
In any case, I greet all such charges now with sneering contempt. Life's to short to sort through them all looking for the occasional righteous one. The deck is all played out; the wolf has howled too often. Who cares anymore?
